The History
of The Florentine

Preserving Birmingham's Architectural Beauty

Henry Upson Sims and architect David O. Whilldin designed and built The Florentine in the mid 1920’s. Said to be in honor of Mr. Sims beloved teacher, Hannah Elliott, who took his class on a tour of Italy. The exterior displays terra-cotta ornaments framing two arcades supported by marble columns and the eaves are crowned by a short red-tile roof. The Italianate style brings the “IT” factor to every event!

After undergoing a multi-million dollar renovation in 2014. This historic landmark has been restored to a beacon of elegance and charm.

"Cannot recommend this venue enough. Will West, the ringmaster here, told us from the beginning that his entire job was to make sure that our wedding weekend was as easy as possible and that we would not have to lift a finger. He followed though on that in spades. Great food, accommodating staff, and beautiful venue. I was not aware of a single issue we had and that is either because they do such a good job so there were no issues or because Will and his team are such fine professionals that they were able to handle it behind the scenes. The only reason I’m assigning 5 stars is because 6 is not possible.”

Every part of The Florentine is gorgeous, the in-house food is amazing, and Will, the coordinator, is super sweet and easy to work with. “…The classic ballroom was beautiful, especially as the sun began to set and the crystal chandeliers reflected the candlelight on the tables. The table linens and place settings were of high quality. The ballroom has such great bones that not a lot of extra decoration is needed.

"Their florist knocked it out of the park with the florals for both the wedding ceremony (at another location) and the reception at The Florentine. Our daughter’s bridal bouquet was one of the biggest I’ve seen and when Michael personally delivered it to her at the girls’ Airbnb that morning, it was such a sweet moment. The arrangements in the ballroom were spectacular and very generous in size and number of blooms. Michael executed what we asked for beautifully, exceeding our expectations!"

"Corretti Catering did an excellent job with the food and the service was great too! We had charcuterie as guests were arriving and then, a buffet dinner. The wedding cake was the best I’ve ever had, and more than one person said the same to me. There was something about it that was oh so good. Rather than have a groom’s cake, we had a cheesecake bar with assorted toppings, and everyone seemed to really enjoy it too. Finally, for a late night pass/snack, we had chicken biscuits. I can’t imagine that anyone left hungry that night. "

“It was a excellent place. I went there for a wedding reception and the experience was marvelous. They had a great staff and great food, and there was plenty of space. I would recommend The Florentine for any exclusive event. They had an open bar to serve quickly and everyone enjoyed themselves. Parking was easy since there was a parking lot across the street. Just an amazing place.”
